At City Park Elementary, we are celebrating our Pawsitive Panther Trait of the month: Creativity! Creativity is all about using our imagination, thinking in new ways, and expressing our ideas with confidence. It’s not just for artists and musicians — creativity is something we use every single day as learners and problem-solvers.
One of the best ways to grow creativity is through READING!
When students read, they build entire worlds in their minds. They imagine characters, settings, and adventures. They predict what might happen next, make connections to their own lives, and think about different ways a story could end. Reading encourages students to ask “What if?” and “Why?” — two very powerful creative questions!
Books also introduce children to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives. The more they read, the more background knowledge they gain — and creativity thrives when students have a rich bank of ideas to draw from. Whether they are writing their own stories, solving a math problem, designing a project, or working with a team, reading strengthens the creative thinking skills they need.
You can support creativity at home by:
Encouraging your child to read a variety of genres.
Asking open-ended questions about what they’re reading.
Inviting them to rewrite the ending of a story.
Having them illustrate a favorite scene or create a new character. When we read, we imagine. When we imagine, we create. And when we create, we grow!
Let’s continue to nurture our creative Panthers — one book at a time.
